The BYU hype is already done. After being ranked No. 2, a spot ahead of Ohio State, in last week's AP Top 25, the Cougars will now be sent packing out of the top five after a loss to UCF.
The Knights were able to emerge victorious 39-31 in double overtime after quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw several incompletions on a goal-line chance. A running into the kicker penalty gave UCF a first down during the Knights' game-winning possession after they were ready to settle for a field goal.
BYU was always a paper tiger No. 2. They are one of several Big 12 teams, along with Texas Tech, that lost their undefeated record against a middle-of-the-pack program in the conference.
With the loss, the Buckeyes are looking up at just one team in the rankings.
It's a familiar one.
Miami is No. 1 still after dominating Pitt
There will be no movement at No. 1, despite the rest of the top five seeing a major shakeup. Miami remained undefeated and looked unstoppable again during a 52-23 win over Pitt at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Hurricanes got a Heisman performance from receiver Malachi Toney, whose 194 receiving yards accounted for more than half of quarterback Darian Mensah's 387 passing yards. Toney also found the end zone three times.
Miami lived up to its No. 1 billing, even if the defense showed vulnerabilities.
Unfortunately, Ohio State no longer matches up well with the Hurricanes and may not be capable of exploiting Miami's defense if the two are matched up again in the CFP. Without Sayin, no one could sling the ball downfield like Panthers quarterback Holden Geriner against the Canes' defense.
That's, of course, if we're not putting the carriage in front of the horse with the Buckeyes' CFP chances.
No Julian Sayin could spell trouble against Miami, other top contenders
Ohio State's potential season-ending injury loss of quarterback Julian Sayin may force the Buckeyes to win games with defense and a strong running game.
Unfortunately for OSU, the team's top running back, Ja'Kobi Jackson, is also slated to be out for an extended period.
It's unclear if the Buckeyes have enough firepower anymore to compete with the best of the best, like Miami or Indiana, the latter of whom just bounced back from the OSU loss to defeat TTUN in Ann Arbor.
Arthur Smith is the man for the job to get the running game going, but it'll be on Bo Jackson and Isaiah West to rise to the occasion in Ja'Kobi's absence. Not to mention an offensive line that's rotating players because of a myriad of injuries, particularly on the right side.
We'll see what Ryan Day's squad is made of in the face of adversity. Right now, it looks like an uphill climb without Sayin, to say the least. Still, they got to see what a bad USC team had, and the Trojans lost to Wisconsin. That gives this team hope for what will come next weekend.
