The biggest collapse in Ohio State football history transpired in Austin on Saturday night. After holding a 20-point lead through three quarters, the Buckeyes blew it and lost 24-23. It's a loss that was inexcusable for a myriad of reasons, and it robbed Ohio State of an opportunity to put a stranglehold on a possible College Football Playoff spot.
Instead, the Ohio State Buckeyes are now behind the eight-ball. They play an extremely tough schedule, and their chances of making the CFP took a big hit after falling apart in the final quarter of this game. After the loss, the Scarlet and Gray took a massive tumble down the polls.
Ohio State falls down the polls after loss to Texas
After entering the game as the number one team in the country in both polls, they slid to sixth in the Coaches Poll. The AP Poll didn't treat them much better, as they fell to sixth in that poll as well. Quite frankly, it's exactly what they deserve after not being able to seal the deal.
What makes things worse for Ohio State is that they had multiple opportunities to slam the door shut on the Longhorns. Connor Hawkins missed a 45-yard field goal with just over four minutes left that would have all but ended any hopes of a Texas comeback.
Ohio State failed to score any points in the fourth quarter. They had several promising drives that ended in punts, which weren't any good, either. Joe McGuire failed to pin Texas deep in their own territory multiple times. He even had a 26-yard punt in this game.
Unless they fix their many problems, Ohio State could be staring at three losses this season. They play some tough teams in the Big Ten portion of their schedule. The good news is they can take out their frustrations against Kent State next week in what will be FOX's Big Noon Kickoff.
The Big Ten had several teams slide in the AP Poll
Ohio State wasn't the only Big Ten team to have a disappointing showing in Week 2. Oregon lost to Oklahoma State, which hadn't beaten an FBS team in 21 straight games. With that loss, they plummeted all the way down to 21st. They were the second-ranked team in the country prior to that loss.
Texas moved up to the top-ranked team in the country, which they deserve after beating the Buckeyes. They have the best win of anyone in college football after coming back. IU jumped to fourth, as they are now the highest-rated Big Ten team.
Ohio State will play five more AP top 25 teams now that TTUN moved back up into the polls after beating Oklahoma. That brutal schedule will be tougher to navigate if Ryan Day keeps having issues finishing games. The special teams have been overlooked for years, and that continues to cost them.
The only polls that matter are the College Football Playoff polls when they come out, and that won't happen for quite a few weeks. Still, Ohio State has clear issues it must figure out.
