The Ohio State football program already has a solid start on the 2027 recruiting class. They already have nine recruits in the class, and that class is already rated as the third-best class so far. After a solid finish to the 2026 recruiting class, the Buckeyes are looking to keep that momentum in 2027.
While it's early, the Ohio State Buckeyes already have two five-star recruiting commits. That includes the top overall recruit in the class, DJ Jacobs. The biggest thing holding them back from really catching traction with offensive recruits was a lack of an offensive coordinator.
With the hiring of Arthur Smith, the Buckeyes are now in a better position to bring in offensive recruits. They were hoping to land the top running back recruit in the country, Kemon Spell. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes have lost out on him to an SEC foe.

Spell decided to commit to Georgia instead of the Buckeyes. He picked the Bulldogs over Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame, and Miami. Spell has a great combination of size and speed, but now he will be using that combination for an SEC foe instead of the Buckeyes.
Ohio State will have to keep searching for its running back for the 2027 recruiting class. With it being so early in the recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes have plenty of time to find the right running back for them. Smith's offensive scheme is something that will attract running back talent.
The Buckeyes didn't feel great about their chances of landing Spell at this stage, so they aren't shocked about his decision to go down South. The good news is that Penn State didn't get him, so he doesn't play in the Big Ten. That's a good compromise for Ohio State.
With the coaching staff set in stone, the Buckeyes can really start to ramp up the offensive recruiting efforts.
