Ohio State football program sends dirty play to Big Ten for review
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program did what it needed to do against Northwestern in order to get the win. Getting a 31-7 win playing on a baseball field is pretty good. One of the reasons why they were able to get the big win is because of freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Smith had four catches for 100 yards in this game. No play involving him was more talked about than his 68-yard catch early in the third quarter. Will Howard had a great throw to him and Smith was able to get a ton of yards after the catch. Then, someone tried to hurt him.
After Smith was already tackled on the ground, Robert Fitzgerald game in and twisted his ankle. It was a clear attempt at hurting him. It's unclear what the motivation was for him trying to inflict pain on Smith, but he deleted his social media account because of it. Ryan Day wasn't happy with the play either.
Ohio State football coach Ryan Day sends dirty play into Big Ten office for a review
Speaking about the play during his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Day mentioned that he had sent the play to the Big Ten office for a review. He's hoping that the conference takes some sort of action against Fitzgerald for what he did against Smith.
Fitzgerald should definitely serve a one-game suspension for what he did. Quite frankly, head coach David Braun should impose some discipline on him. He shouldn't condone the type of behavior that Fitzgerald exhibited on that play. The Buckeyes are completely right in sending this play in.
It remains to be seen if the Big Ten will take some sort of action. Day mentioned that he's waiting to hear back from them. I doubt anything will be done, but that's the wrong action. He should be punished for intentionally trying to hurt someone else.
