Ohio State football program has one massive piece left to figure out for 2026

With a lot of Transfer Portal work done, the Buckeyes still have one massive piece of business to attend to.

The Ohio State football program is almost finished adding players from the Transfer Portal. With the portal officially closing on Friday night, the Buckeyes are finished losing players. They can still add players who have decided to enter the portal, but they have added a fair number of players already.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have addressed several needs so far this offseason. They were able to get a kicker, several defensive linemen, and a couple of receivers. That isn't the only thing that the Buckeyes needed to do this offseason. They still have to replace Brian Hartline as the offensive coordinator.

Since Hartline announced his intention to leave for USF to be their head coach right before the Big Ten Championship, Ryan Day still hasn't made a hire to replace him. That remains the biggest piece of business that needs to be attended to heading into the rest of the offseason.

The Ohio State football team needs to hire a good offensive coordinator

Day has been rumored to be interested in some NFL people to potentially be the offensive coordinators. Rumors have been everywhere, from Brian Daboll to J.T. Barrett. Day has had a month and a half to make a hiring decision, and he has not done that yet.

The only logical explanation is that the person he would like to hire is still participating in the NFL playoffs. That, or he is waiting for his NFL candidates to get through the NFL hiring cycle first. Then, he might be able to land the true number one target on his list.

Even so, Ohio State needs to nail this hire. It's clear that Day cannot be the play-caller next season. He needs to bring someone in who can take over the duties and allow Day to be more of a CEO-type head coach, just as he was in 2024 when the Buckeyes won it all.
