Ohio State football: Is there cause for concern at quarterback?

The Ohio State football team will have a new starting quarterback this year. The favorite just had a poor performance. Should fans be worried?

The Ohio State football team will have a new quarterback this season. After Will Howard led the Buckeyes to a national championship, he moved on to the NFL. That means that a new player will have to come in and take the job. Julian Sayin is the favorite to win the job.

However, he did not have a great performance at the scrimmage that the Buckeyes had on Saturday, according to some reports. Lincoln Kienholz was someone who was able to play better. While it doesn't seem like fans need to be alarmed, things have certainly gotten more interesting.

This is the first time that the Ohio State Buckeyes have done a scrimmage this Spring. It was everyone's first opportunity on this new squad to show how well they can play in a game-like setting. It doesn't sound like Sayin was on his game. Do the Buckeyes have a problem?

Does the Ohio State football team have a problem at quarterback?

It sounds like Sayin should still be considered the favorite, but the gap is closer than it was before. He needs to be able to play consistently in order for Ryan Day to give him the job. Consistency has been something that Day has harped on in the past when it comes to naming a starting quarterback.

Whichever QB can show the most consistency is going to win the job. Day won't name a starter until the Fall, so this Spring is a great time for both Sayin and Kienholz to work on mechanics so they can be more consistent. Tavien St. Clair doesn't really have a shot to win the job.

Ultimately, I wouldn't worry too much. If Sayin performs poorly during the Spring Game and in Fall camp, then Ohio State has an issue. Until then, he just needs to focus on trying to get better every day.
