Ohio State football given a depressing outlook at holding on to top recruit

The Ohio State football program has hope that it can hold on to the top recruit in the country. A recent report seems to doubt that.

Heading into the 2026 season, the Ohio State football team is hoping to assemble a really talented 2027 recruiting class. In 2026, the Buckeyes had the fourth-best recruiting class in the country. That doesn't include the transfers they were able to bring in, either.

For the 2027 class, the Ohio State Buckeyes already have the third-best class. A big reason for that ranking is the fact that they have the top overall recruit in the country. DJ Jacobs gave the Buckeyes a commitment last season. So far, he is still locked in with them.

However, Jacobs recently took a visit to Miami. The Hurricanes have their eyes on flipping him, and they will do almost anything to land him. Ryan Day and his staff feel confident they can keep him, but one report suggests that confidence might be misplaced.

Ohio State football is projected to have a hard time keeping DJ Jacobs

According to Tom Loy of 247Sports, the Buckeyes are projected to have a hard time keeping Jacobs throughout the recruiting cycle. Loy has some tough words for the Buckeyes, believing that the Hurricanes will still likely end up with Jacobs.

"'There's a better chance of you enrolling up at Ohio State than DJ Jacobs.' That is what a source recently told me about 247Sports' top prospect. There are connected sources around this recruitment who remain shocked by Jacobs' initial commitment to the Buckeyes. Most had him pegged for Miami and continue to be surprised he didn't end up with the Hurricanes. In addition, those same sources believe he'll eventually find his way to Coral Gables."

That doesn't sound good! It is still very early in the 2027 recruiting class. Jacobs still has a shot to stay with Ohio State. He did mention that Larry Johnson was a big reason why he committed in the first place. Johnson has a track record of developing some of the best DEs in the country.

Jacobs will likely command a pretty penny from Ohio State. Ross Bjork seems a little more open to paying recruits right out of the gate than he has in the past. That could be because of the new rules that are in effect. Of course, President Trump is trying to strike those down, too.

Ohio State will not overpay for Jacobs. If Miami drops a giant bag in front of him, don't expect the Buckeyes to match.
