The Ohio State football team was not very happy with its seeding in the first 12-team College Football Playoff. They thought they deserved to be higher than eighth, but that's where the Committee put them. They had to be behind both Boise State and Arizona State, who were conference champs.
Because of the fact that they were conference champs, they both got automatic byes in the first round of the CFP. Most college football fans could see that neither of those teams was capable of actually winning the national championship, so why should they get a first-round bye?
The Ohio State Buckeyes didn't care much once the games started. They ran through a gauntlet of a schedule in order to win the national championship, completing the most impressive four-game run in college football history. Now, they might not have to do that.
New CFP seeding rules should benefit the Ohio State football team moving forward
Moving forward, the College Football Playoff will move forward with a straight seeding model, meaning that conference champs are no longer guaranteed a first-round bye. This is big news for college football, and it's news that should help the Buckeyes moving forward, as well.
Because of this move, the Buckeyes are likely going to be one of the highest seeds in most years. They won't be stuck at eight like they were in 2024, as long as they don't completely stink. That will result in an easier path to the national championship for them.
Of course, Ohio State had no problems running through Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame en route to winning the title. Still, fans will be happy that any future run through the CFP will likely be much easier for them.
Ohio State is hoping that it can be the number-one overall seed in the CFP in 2025.
