Ohio State football facing concerning CFP stat before showdown with Miami

The Buckeyes have not had much luck in the past when playing on New Year's Eve, but they hope to close out 2025 on a high note.

Ohio State is just hours away from taking on the Miami Hurricanes in what will be the first game in this year's College Football Playoff for the Buckeyes. Ohio State has played seven of the 12 College Football Playoff brackets, and this will be the third time they play on New Year's Eve.

The Buckeyes may not be too happy to be playing on the holiday, as in the past, they have not had too much luck playing on this day. Of the six times they have been in the CFP before this season, Ohio State has played on New Year's Eve, and both of those times have not ended well for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State seems to have trouble winning on New Year's Eve during the CFP

This holiday has not been too kind to Ohio State when it comes to playing in the College Football Playoff. Back in 2016, the first time Ohio State had been in the playoff since they won it in 2014, the Buckeyes were served an absolute beatdown by Clemson, 31-0, who would go on to win it all.

In 2022, Ohio State fell to the eventual National Champion yet again as the Buckeyes lost at the stroke of midnight Eastern time when Georgia kicked a game-winning field goal to win it all.

Ohio State is set to play on New Year's Eve for the third time tonight as they take on the Miami Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. EST. If Ohio State does fall to the Hurricanes tonight, they will continue a trend they wish they had never started. The slight good news is that the game shouldn't end at the stroke of midnight this year with a 7:30 p.m. start time.

On the other side of it, the Buckeyes have a chance to change a concerning stat for the future as they could be a team to play on this date for many years to come. It should be a great game, and the Buckeyes are hoping to change a narrative that, unfortunately, has been set before.
