The Buckeyes have gotten the best of Arch Manning through the first three quarters of Week 1, and social media is ripping the young Texas QB.

Ohio State’s Week 1 matchup wasn’t just hyped as a matchup between the No. 1 team in the country and the defending national champions; it was billed as the beginning of the Arch Manning era in college football. By now, you know the story of the son of Cooper and nephew of Peyton and Eli, and you know how social media operates, so you can imagine how things are going online with the Buckeyes locking up the Longhorns’ offense at Ohio Stadium.

Manning’s first half was ugly, but Texas found some momentum on the ground in the third quarter, leading to a 15-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a goalline stop. Ohio State’s defense stopped Manning on a quarterback sneak on fourth down, then once Texas forced Ohio State to punt, the Buckeyes took the ball right back.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, also the Longhorns’ playcaller, dialed up a deeper shot for Manning, and it resulted in his first interception of the year. Social media wasn’t kind to the redshirt sophomore QB, and Ohio State fans rejoiced as their dominant defense is back.

Ohio State defense dominating Texas in Matt Patricia’s debut

Last year, Ohio State clinched its spot in the National Championship Game with a goalline stop against Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinal. However, the Buckeyes lost plenty of their stars from last year’s defense, including Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau, Tyleik Williams, and Ty Hamilton from the defensive line, and their defense coordinator, Jim Knowles, to Penn State.

Yet, the Buckeyes have controlled the line of scrimmage all game, and Knowles’ replacement, former NFL head coach Matt Patricia, has kept a lid on the Texas offense and confused Manning, including baiting him into his first interception of the season and third of his young career.

Patricia hasn’t coached in college since he was a graduate assistant coach on the Syracuse staff in 2003. Yet, one of Bill Belichick’s proteges from his days in New England seems to be comfortable at the collegiate level, handling Manning, the Heisman Trophy favorite, and Sarkisian, one of the sport’s best play-callers.

With such a dominant performance through three quarters, Ohio State fans and the rest of social media took their shots at Manning.

Maybe even better for Buckeyes fans was their young quarterback, Julian Sayin’s response to the turnover, hitting Carnell Tate for a 40-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-0.
