Heading into this season, Ohio State is expected to be the national champion. That is what both the media and the coaches expect, as the Buckeyes were ranked first in both preseason polls. It's the first time since 2015 that they have been able to accomplish that feat.
The Buckeyes have been able to be one of the best programs in the country for the past three decades. They are one of the only recession-proof programs that there are. That is evidenced by the fact that they have now extended their record for preseason poll appearances.
Ohio State extends record of appearing in preseason AP Polls
With the Ohio State Buckeyes appearing as the top-ranked team in the AP Poll, they have now appeared in 38 consecutive preseason AP polls. That is a record, and it was one that the Buckeyes owned heading into this season. The next closest program is Oklahoma, which has appeared in 26 straight.

That shows a remarkable amount of consistency that the Buckeyes have had over almost four decades. Of course, this is just the preseason polls. There have been seasons in which Ohio State has finished unranked. Even so, they are considered one of the best teams almost every year.
Ohio State doesn't seem like they are going to fall apart for any reason under Ryan Day to the point that it won't appear in the preseason poll as long as he is in charge. With NIL now legal, Ohio State should always be one of the 25 best teams in the country.
Quite frankly, there's no reason why Ohio State should be worse than a top-15 team every single year. Ohio State is going to be one of the best teams every single year simply because of how much revenue they are able to generate and how many alumni are willing to donate to NIL causes.
Ohio State deserves its number-one ranking
The Buckeyes deserved to get their top overall ranking in the AP Poll. With what they return on the offensive side of the ball, they are going to be hard to stop. That, along with Matt Patricia returning to coordinate the defense, shows that the team should be ready to contend for a title.
In order to make the College Football Playoff and win a championship, they will need to successfully navigate one of the hardest schedules in the country. The rest of the poll shows what kind of murder's row they have to deal with. They have to play six top-25 teams this year.
Oregon, Texas, Indiana, Iowa, USC, and TTUN are all on the schedule. The Ducks, Hoosiers, and Longhorns are all in the top six. Winning all of those games will be incredibly challenging, but if any team can do it, it's this one. Ohio State is using preseason camp to prepare for that.
Of course, all of those teams have to play the Buckeyes, too. Ohio State is going to be favored in most of their games this year,
