The hiring of Matt Patricia to be Ohio State's defensive coordinator last season was the most important decision that Ryan Day made last season. After losing Jim Knowles to Penn State, he was under pressure to bring in another coach who could keep the defense playing at a high level.
Patricia ended up being the perfect hire. Not only did the defense continue to play great in 2025, but they actually played better than the 2024 defense. The Buckeyes were statistically the best defense in the country. Patricia's ability to scheme up defenses was very important.
On Monday, Ross Bjork let everyone know that the Ohio State Buckeyes had re-signed Patricia, and he will return for the 2026 season. Ryan Day was asked about bringing Patricia back, and he gave some comments on the decision for the first time since the news was released.

While talking to Dom Tiberi of 10TV, Day made sure that everyone knew that bringing Patricia back was a priority for him this offseason.
"We wanted to make sure that we solidified Matt moving forward. He did a great job this year. He certainly, from the jump, built great trust within the building with coaches, players, and you saw the product on the field. Really excited that we solidified his future at Ohio State."
When Dom pressed him about details, including the length and the amount of the extension, Day declined to answer.
"No. I'll let Ross (Bjork) and everyone there handle how we're going to move forward on all that."
Even though Day declined to let everyone know the details on Patricia's contract, it's still something that is great. Day even acknowledged that Patricia will have more people coming after him next offseason, but they are going to work to keep him.
The Buckeyes are in a good spot with Patricia leading the defense once again, even though a lot of talent from this year's team will now be heading to the NFL. Still, bringing Patricia back gives them the best chance to win a national championship.
