Ohio State Buckeyes football coach Ryan Day was highly complimentary of his two starting quarterback options, Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz, in mid-August with three weeks until the Texas Longhorns come to town.

Day is pleased with their progress and believes there's a healthy attitude at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center from the competition.

“The competition continues,” Day said, per the Associated Press. “They both have had good moments and moments where they're growing. I will say I've been pleased with the progress. It's going to go right down to the wire.

“The positives of having a competition is that you know every day you got to bring it. The guys are always on edge, they’re uncomfortable, they’re working at it. I think that’s healthy for the entire building.”

Day's Laissez-faire attitude about the QB position is all well and good to some, but others believe there needs to be some urgency with one of the projected top teams of the country making their way to Columbus in the season's first week.

The Athletic's Cameron Teague is part of the camp that's worried Day still hasn't decided on a singular locker room leader.

"Ohio State would be better off if somebody took control of this battle early in camp and carried the momentum into the final weeks of August, but that can’t be guaranteed. Although most believe Sayin will win the job, the competition is likely to continue through most of August," Teague wrote.

"Still, even if it could make sense for Day to play both quarterbacks in certain situations this season, especially with Kienholz’s athleticism, the Buckeyes need one starter going into Texas."

The Associated Press's Joe Reedy reports that Sayin is the slight favorite. If anything, Sayin only being a "slight" favorite is the true issue.

OSU's QB1 job was his for the taking. Instead of taking it, he let Kienholz make it a controversy.

Now, Day has to play it off like it's a good thing that he has multiple quarterbacks -- meaning to many, he has none at all.
