The Ohio State basketball team had a very disappointing year. They were expected to make the NCAA Tournament in Jake Diebler's first year. It looked like they were well on their way to doing so, before a late-season collapse took them out of a chance to make the Tournament.
Ohio State was listed as one of the first four teams out. They were never going to get in after losing to Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament. Iowa then fired Fran McCaffrey after losing their next game. Now, there are going to be some big roster changes for the Ohio State Buckeyes next year.
The Buckeyes won't be playing in the Crown, so they are already looking ahead to the offseason to improve their roster for the next few years. Current players are also going to leave in the transfer portal. Austin Parks has already declared for the portal, and now the Buckeyes have lost another guy.
Ohio State basketball player Evan Mahaffey enters the transfer portal
Guard Evan Mahaffey has decided to enter the transfer portal. Mahaffey was someone who Chris Holtmann had brought in from the transfer portal already, so this is the second time that he will enter the transfer portal in his collegiate career. He becomes the second Ohio State player to enter the portal.
This is not a huge loss for the Buckeyes. Mahaffey is a good defender, but he's not someone who is an offensive threat. He can't make threes, and teams don't respect his outside game. It's really hard to be effective as a guard who can't shoot. It won't kill them now that he is gone.
Ohio State will be very active in the transfer portal. They need to get better at almost every position on the court. There will be more guys who declare for the portal. As long as it's not one of their three best players, that's okay.
