There has been some strong college baseball in Ohio this year. The flagship school of the Buckeye State has been having a great year and has been doing it under the radar! Ohio State is in its second year under head coach Justin Haire. The Buckeyes were 13-37 and 5-25 in the Big Ten in year one of the Justin Haire Era. In year two, they are improving by leaps and bounds, and they showed it over the weekend against a good baseball team.
OSU had a home series against #16 Nebraska. The Cornhuskers were 34-11 and 17-4 in the Big Ten coming into this series with the Buckeyes. Ohio State had great pitching in all three games, and its hitting only improved as the series went on. Gavin Kuzniewski led Ohio State to victory in game one.
Kuzniewski allowed only one run in eight innings and led the Buckeyes to the 2-1 victory. In game two, Chris Domke was on the mound for OSU, and he allowed only two runs (one earned run). The Buckeye bats came alive, and Ohio State got the 7-3 win and clinched the series. Game three saw Pierce Herrenbruck go seven innings and allow only one run in a 10-1 Buckeye victory and series sweep.
Ohio State's hitting came alive, too. The Buckeyes jacked nine home runs in their three games against Nebraska, with catcher and designated hitter Mason Eckelman hitting three home runs, and right fielder Noah Furcht and first baseman Dane Harvey each hitting two. Eckelman was named Big Ten Player of the Week for batting .600 against Nebraska, hitting three homers, and knocking in eight runs.
Ohio State went from 13-37 and 5-25 in the Big Ten to 24-21 and 13-11 in the Big Ten with two weeks of baseball left to be played. OSU is now sixth in the Big Ten standings. The Buckeyes game against Miami (Ohio) was rained out this week, but they'll take on the Michigan State Spartans this weekend at home in Columbus, Ohio.
