The Ohio State football program won the national championship last season in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. It was the first time that any team had to navigate that long of a season, and the Buckeyes did it perfectly. They ended up securing the national title.
Despite winning it all, they still were at a disadvantage in one key area. The transfer portal opened up right after the regular season ended, and the Buckeyes were still playing. It made things very awkward for players, because they had to make a decision on their future while the team was still playing.
Athletic director Ross Bjork doesn't want this to happen again to Ohio State or any team. He also wants to make sure that the hours a team can practice are fair for all teams. He voiced his concerns directly to the College Football Playoff Committee so they knew exactly where he stood.
Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork demands changes to CFP calendar
In an interview with ESPN, Bjork talked about the need for the CFP to be proactive instead of reactive as things start to change around NIL. He wants there to just be one transfer portal time period for Fall sports, with that period falling in a ten-day period in May.
Bjork certainly isn't the only athletic director who feels this way. Others have indicated an issue with the way the calendar is set up for the CFP, but Bjork decided to directly voice his concerns. The Buckeyes were the guinea pigs in this first 12-team run, and he has seen all of the disadvantages that the calendar gives.
Whether or not these concerns are considered remains to be seen. College football isn't exactly known for addressing things in a speedy manner. It would make sense if changes were enacted, though.
