The Ohio State football team will start its season in just a couple of weeks against Texas in what will be the biggest season opener in the history of the Ohio State Buckeyes. It will be an epic game, although some things still need to be decided before that game happens.
One of those things was who is going to wear the coveted Block O jersey for the Buckeyes this season. Sonny Styles has been the favorite to win that honor, and that's exactly who will wear it. Styles was also one of the captains named by the team, as well.
Styles is one of the leaders on the defensive end of the ball, so having him wear the jersey comes as no surprise. Being voted a captain is no surprise, either. Three other captains were named by the Buckeyes, with one other defensive player getting that recognition.
The Ohio State football team has named its team captains for 2025
Caleb Downs is the other defensive player who will be a captain. He is the best defensive player in the country, so it makes sense that the rest of the team respects his leadership. As a junior, this is likely Downs's last year playing for the Buckeyes before he becomes a first-round pick.
Austin Siereveld is one of the captains, as well. He has been one of the most improved players on the roster this offseason and looks set to start at left tackle after essentially being benched as a guard last year. The work he has put in has clearly impressed his teammates.
Receiver Brandon Inniss is the final captain on the team. Inniss is expected to be much more involved in the game plan this season now that Emeka Egbuka is playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buckeyes are expecting big things from him as the third receiver.
Perhaps the biggest thing to note is that a quarterback will not be one of the captains of the team this season. It's very unusual for a QB to not be one of the captains of a team, especially one that has national championship aspirations.
Julian Sayin is still the favorite to win the job, but he has not officially been announced as the starter yet. Not having him as a captain shows just how close the quarterback battle is at this point, and he has not blown anyone away.
