The Ohio State football team had a horrendous showing on defense against Oregon. They allowed almost 500 yards of offense and let the Ducks score 32 points. Both were season-highs by a lot. The Buckeyes simply looked out-matched on that side of the ball.

It was a shock to see how poorly the Ohio State Buckeyes played on that side of the ball. For how many players they brought back a year ago, as well as the additions from the transfer portal, they were supposed to be the best defense in college football. We all know now that's not the case.

The best coach of all time is Nick Saban. He watched how the Buckeyes played against the Ducks, and he did not like what he saw, specifically from the defensive side of the ball. Speaking on the Pat McAfee show, he had some tough words about how the defense is run.

Nick Saban calls the Ohio State football team's defensive scheme "antiquated"

Take a look at the clip below of Saban talking about the game last weekend.

As you can see in the clip above, Saban calls the way that the Buckeyes run their defensive scheme "sort of antiquated.". The greatest coach of all time is calling what Ohio State does on that side of the ball a system that can't be run effectively anymore. That's an indictment of what Jim Knowles and his staff are doing.

I can't say he's wrong. We thought this defense was going to be ridiculously hard to move the ball against. Oregon clearly dispelled that theory. Something has to change if they want to win the Big Ten and make the College Football Playoff, or win a national championship.

Ohio State football fans hope that the defense will look better following the bye week. It can't look worse. But it's clear from Coach Saban and everyone else who watches the Buckeyes that something needs to be different moving forward.
