The Ohio State football team continues to try to fill out the 2027 recruiting class. The last commitment they received was back at the end of April. A lot of the commitments they have so far in this class are on the offensive side of the ball. So far, they only have 11 commitments.
That ranks just 10th in the country in terms of the recruiting rankings. Of course, they will have the entire summer to add to their class. There's no reason to panic. In fact, the Ohio State Buckeyes are expected to pick up a couple of commitments at the end of the month.
One defensive recruit that the Buckeyes are hoping to land is four-star linebacker AJ Randle. Randle stands at 6'3 and 210 pounds. He is from Garner, North Carolina. Randle has six schools left on his final list, and now he has set a commitment date for later for next week.
Ohio State recruiting target sets commitment date a week away
Randle will make his collegiate school decision a week from today, as he has set it for May 21st. He will be choosing between the Buckeyes, Miami, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and NC State. Ohio State is the only northern school that Randle has on his list.
James Laurinaitis has done a good job on the recruiting trail since being hired as the linebackers coach. He has already managed to bring in a few five-star recruits. Recruits seem to appreciate what Laurinaitis accomplished when he was a linebacker for Ohio State, as he is one of the best backers in school history.
Bringing in Randle would give the Buckeyes their second linebacker of the 2027 recruiting class. They already have four-star recruit Quinton Cypher in the class. Having both Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles drafted in the top 10 last month certainly helps on the recruiting front.
Ohio State football recruiting is about to heat up
The Buckeyes are about to get busy on the recruiting trail within the next two months. They have an opportunity to add several recruits in the next few weeks as camp season starts to ramp up. That's usually when they do the bulk of their recruiting work, anyway.
There is a chance that Ryan Day might end up taking a little bit more of an emphasis on the Transfer Portal at the end of the year instead of filling the entire roster with high school recruits. Older rosters seem to be the theme of college football in the last few years.
When the Buckeyes won the national championship a couple of years ago, they had older transfers they brought in to help them get over the hump, and that's exactly what they did. Indiana did the exact same thing last season. Still, Day is committed to doing the bulk of his roster building from the high school ranks.
Even if Ohio State doesn't end up landing Randle, they still have plenty of other opportunities to improve the defense later this year.
