Just a year ago, things were great for Jim Knowles. He was in charge of the Ohio State football team's defense, turning them into the most fearsome defense in the country. It looked like he was poised to get an extension and stay with the Buckeyes for the foreseeable future.
Then, Knowles decided to leave the Ohio State Buckeyes for Penn State. He decided to work for James Franklin, who was fired in the middle of the season. Knowles' defense played terribly, including against the Buckeyes. Meanwhile, Ohio State replaced him with Matt Patricia, who has made the defense even better.
Ohio State is the second seed in the College Football Playoff. Knowles is now sitting at home, wondering where he's going to work next. Knowles has reportedly been fired less than a year after celebrating a national championship with the Buckeyes.
Former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has reportedly been fired
According to Pete Nakos of On3, Knowles is not being retained by Matt Campbell, the new head coach at Penn State. Campbell has already completed a deal to bring Jim Heacock with him from Iowa State to be the new defensive coordinator with the Nittany Lions.
The last 12 months have been a stunning turn of events for Knowles. He was the most accomplished defensive coordinator in the sport in January. Now, he is going to have to look somewhere else to coach. It shows that Knowles clearly made the wrong call to leave Columbus.
Ohio State could not have made a better hire by bringing Patricia in. Now, he is the talk of Columbus. If the Buckeyes win back-to-back national titles, Patricia will be a large reason that they do. His ability to refine the defense with the talent they have on the roster has been extremely impressive.
Knowles will likely find another job before next season, but he's certainly not going to make as much money as he would have with the Buckeyes or as he did with the Nittany Lions.
