The Ohio State football team is one win away from winning a national championship. It would cap off a ridiculous run through the College Football Playoff. So far in this run, they haven't had a game that was within single-digits. All of their games have been blowouts.
If the Buckeyes do win on Monday night, it would be their first national title since the 2014 season. That year was also a legendary run for them, although it didn't require as many games. Still, it was an all-time run for the program. Winning a national championship with a third-string quarterback is incredibly hard to do.
In this year's run, the Ohio State Buckeyes would have beaten Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame. This is, of course, assuming they beat Notre Dame on Monday. The Irish are a great team, so that's no guarantee. If that does happen, though, how does this year's run compare to 2014?
Comparing this year's Ohio State football CFP run to the 2014 CFP run
The Buckeyes only lost one game back in 2014. They also were able to beat Michigan, something they failed to do this season. After that game, they won 59-0 against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship, took down the king of the SEC, Alabama, and beat Oregon for a national championship.
This year, there are some similarities. The Buckeyes have run through their CFP opponents, winning by 14+ points against Tennessee, Oregon, and Texas. Jack Sawyer had an all-time play in the Cotton Bowl, similar to what Ezekiel Elliott did against the Crimson Tide.
Ultimately, I think the run in 2014 is a better run because of the circumstances around that team. They had a third-string quarterback take them on this run. They also had to deal with the tragic passing of one of their teammates during this run.
Everything about that run was about a team that never gave up. While this year's run has been great, it still hasn't matched what happened in 2014. Of course, for any of this to matter, the Buckeyes must take care of business on Monday night.
