The NCAA will now be operating under a set of new rules, thanks to the House settlement that was officially approved on Friday night. The Ohio State basketball program is going to be affected in a new way because of all of these rules that they now need to abide by.
Jake Diebler has enough on his plate with figuring out how to get his team to play well enough to make the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes have missed it in each of the last three seasons, which is the longest streak since the 1990s. These new rules might help them.
How the new rules will affect the Ohio State basketball team moving forward
First off, the house settlement introduces an NIL cap. That cap will increase every year, but it gives the basketball team a budget to work with. How Diebler recruits players from both the high school ranks and the transfer portal will be affected by the budget moving forward.
As of right now, there are no roster limits. That will be changed by the time basketball season rolls around. The new College Sports Commission will have basketball roster limits set by the time the season is ready to start. Diebler can barely fill the roster as it is, anyway.
Ross Bjork mentioned that the athletic department was going to commit money to the basketball program. Now that schools are directly paying players, he has a shot to put his money where his mouth is. That is the biggest thing from this house settlement.
Schools will now directly pay players, which means that the Ohio State Buckeyes will be dealing with contracts with these players, as well as the boosters who help fund them. How Diebler allocates his budget will be the biggest deal that the program will have to deal with.
