The Ohio State golf program doesn't have a long history of success, but they have produced some of the best golfers in the history of the game. Maxwell Moldovan is trying to join the likes of some of those golfers.
John Cook, who made the PGA Tour, played his golf at Ohio State. So did Tom Weiskopf, who won 16 times on tour, including a major. Of course, the greatest golfer of all time played for the Ohio State Buckeyes. That's Jack Nicklaus, who has a record 18 major victories.
Moldovan is trying to win his first after just turning professional just a few months ago. The former Buckeye is playing in the US Open this weekend at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. He started his round on Thursday morning in the best way possible.
Former Ohio State golfer Maxwell Moldovan starts his round with an incredible eagle
Moldovan had one of the best shots of the day when he started off his round on the 1st hole. He hit a perfect second shot while not even being able to see the hole because it was directly into the sun. It rolled into the hole for the perfect start to his round, making an Eagle.
We have an early contender for shot of the day, and potentially shot of the championship!

A golfer could not have asked for a better start on what is a brutally tough golf course. For a very brief moment, Moldovan had the lead all to himself. It's too bad that Moldovan wasn't able to hold onto that for very long, though. He gave up those two shots on the next two holes, bogeying both.
By the time his round had finished, he had carded a six-over 76. He finished the first round tied for 98th, which is not what he was hoping for after such a great start. He will have to fight to make the cut on Friday afternoon, which will not be easy to do.
No matter what happens the rest of the tournament for him, he will always have that first iron shot that he hit. He will remember that first hole for the rest of his life.
