The Ohio State football program had one of the best players in the history of college football on its roster in the 1970s. Archie Griffin was not just one of the best running backs in college football but of all time. He played under Woody Hayes and was one of the leaders of those teams.
Griffin is still the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy. He won the award in 1974 and in 1975. To this day, he is still the only player who was good enough to win it twice, and he did it in back-to-back seasons. It can be argued that he actually had a better season in 1973.
Griffin had 1,577 yards rushing and seven touchdowns as a sophomore in 1973. It was the start of what would be an epic run for him. He actually had a better year that season than in 1975, when he won the Heisman for the second time. The Heisman Trophy Voting Committee agreed.
Former Ohio State football player Archie Griffin gets a third Heisman Trophy
That's why the Heisman Trophy Committee has decided to add a third Heisman to his trophy case. Not only is he the only two-time Heisman winner, but he has now become the only three-time Heisman winner. That solidifies him as the best player in the history of college football.
In fact, the vote was unanimous. The Voting Committee decided that he deserved it more than John Cappelletti, who was the previous winner, or Griffin's teammate John Hicks, who finished second. Griffin's statue by the Shoe will now be twice as big as it was last season.
Griffin was alerted to the news and was seen doing donuts on Ohio State's campus with a scarlet and gray Maserati. He certainly loves the Ohio State Buckeyes, and wanted to celebrate with everyone! The fans have always loved Griffin.
In case you haven't figured this out by now, none of this is actually real. No, Griffin was not retroactively given another Heisman Trophy. I wish you a very Happy April Fool's Day from everyone here at Scarlet and Game.
