A lot of people are trying to fix collegiate sports. Many within college sports are asking for government help to help figure out a set of rules that everyone will follow for years to come. The Ohio State football program is trying to navigate those changes.
The Buckeyes have navigated them better than most. The Ohio State Buckeyes won the national championship in 2024. Of course, they still have to figure out a way to make NIL a complete advantage for them. In general, college football has to get a hold of NIL problems.
President Donald Trump has decided to organize a roundtable with both collegiate decision-makers and politicians to see if they can find a solution. A former Buckeye head coach is among those attending this meeting to see if he can help fix things.
Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer attends college sports roundtable
Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is one of many people attending the college sports roundtable. No current Buckeyes will be in attendance, however. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Pettiti is there, as well as some other Big Ten representatives from other schools.
It's unclear what will come from this meeting. The NCAA has started pleading with Congress for federal guidelines for the last couple of years, which is way later than they should have. The NCAA has been dragging its feet for decades about most of the issues that have crept up.
Meyer was a coach in college football for almost four decades. He understands the college football landscape. He is there to try to get some guardrails that everyone can follow. Right now, there is no set of actual rules that any school is incentivized to follow.
It does seem like the federal government should have better things to do than this, but college sports are at a crisis point. The NCAA has screwed this up so badly that it's going to take a long while for things to get back under control.
