Ohio State football fans have a complicated relationship with Jim Knowles. Knowles came in and really helped a struggling Buckeye defense turn around. He helped slowly build that unit into the best one in football. That culminated in 2024 when the Buckeyes won the national championship.
Right after the title, Knowles decided to leave the Ohio State Buckeyes. Despite the fact that Ryan Day wanted to bring him back, he spurned him to go to Penn State. He was the highest-paid coordinator in college football with that move, but that didn't last long. He was fired once James Franklin was canned.
Now, Knowles has made the decision to coach at Tennessee. Some fans of Ohio State dislike him, while some appreciate what he did for them. No matter how they feel about him, Knowles isn't coaching near them anymore. Now, he has had a major life update.

Knowles has now married his long-time girlfriend, Andi. This is a happy moment for him, and it's probably smart for him to get this taken care of before the season starts. Once the college football season kicks off, he is going to be under a lot of pressure.
Volunteer fans think he will be the second coming of Christ himself, but Buckeye fans know he is a slow burn. Penn State's defense stunk last year in the first year of his system, as it did when he coached Ohio State in his first season. His defense takes a while to implement.
Knowles needs at least three years to build his defense into a truly strong unit. If he lasts that long in Knoxville, Tennessee will have a strong unit on that side of the ball. He is a very strong recruiter. But will Tennessee have enough patience to wait that long? Or will they want more instant results?
Ohio State is better off with Matt Patricia leading the defense
The Buckeyes led the nation in pretty much every statistical category a year ago in Matt Patricia's first year leading the defense. He has returned, and the defense should once again be very nasty. In fact, the defense was statistically better than the one Knowles led in 2024 in that title-winning year.
Players have raved about Patricia and his coaching style. They love the way he teaches them why they are running certain plays and why they will work. Knowles never did that. Instead, he just told the players to run the plays and said that they would work. They did, but some players didn't like that style of coaching.
Ohio State fans have really started to dislike the Volunteers since the 2024 season. Their fans tried to claim the Shoe as "Neyland North" before getting absolutely massacred. Since then, Tennessee fans have tried to do things to get under Ohio State fans' skin.
Ohio State is hoping to get another big win over Tennessee, this time on the recruiting trail. Landing David Gabriel Georges would certainly be sweet.
