When you succeed as an assistant coach with the Ohio State football program, you have opportunities opened up for you. Other programs are going to want you to lead their teams. Unfortunately, it doesn't always go well when that happens.
We've already seen two former Buckeye coaches get fired over the last week. Stan Drayton was let go after three horrendous years leading Temple. He wasn't the only one to get canned. Tom Herman was let go as the head coach of FAU after two horrific years leading the Owls.
Another coach who used to coach with the Ohio State Buckeyes has now been let go. Kevin Wilson, who was the offensive coordinator with the Buckeyes from 2017-2022, has been fired as the head coach of Tulsa. Wilson was actually the co-OC with Ryan Day until 2019 when Day got promoted to head coach.
Former Ohio State football coach Kevin Wilson gets fired
Wilson left the Buckeyes in 2022 to become the head coach of Tulsa. He had been hired by Urban Meyer to help run the offense after he was let go as the head coach of Indiana. After taking over Tulsa, Wilson went just 7-16. His record as a head coach now stands at just 33-63 and he's played in just one bowl game.
This isn't a surprising result. Wilson had been on the hot seat for a while this season. He might look around for another offensive coordinating position, but his days as a head coach are likely over. It's clear he's not the right person to lead a program to wins.
We'll see where Wilson ultimately lands because he is still a smart offensive play-caller. Whether or not he gets that opportunity at the P4 level remains to be seen. His recent record hasn't been very good.
