Before the final four games of the 2024 season, Ohio State football fans were calling for Ryan Day to be fired. He had lost four straight games to TTUN, and the vibes had never been lower. Then, he flipped the switch and helped Ohio State win 16 straight games.
Winning the national championship with the Ohio State Buckeyes solidified Day's legacy. He was no longer "born on third base"; he was a national champion. He had the reputation as a choker in the biggest moments. That run flipped that narrative on its head.
Duke fans watched their team suffer one of the most painful losses in college basketball history. After leading UConn by 19 points in the Elite 8, they lost on a logo three. Fans are now comparing Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer to pre-championship Ryan Day.
Duke fans are comparing Jon Scheyer to pre-title Ryan Day
Fans took to social media to crush Jon Scheyer in a similar fashion fans were bashing Day just weeks before winning a title.
Jon Scheyer and Duke just had 2 all-time NCAA Tournament collapses in B2B years.

Duke’s Cayden Boozer will be blamed for throwing the stupid pass but and turning the ball over to allow the game winner from UConn, but in all honesty that loss is on Jon Scheyer and the Duke coaching staff playing safe in the 2H and blew a 19 point lead…

JON SCHEYER BORN ON 3rd and CANT SCORE

That last one really underscores how much Blue Devils fans are comparing Scheyer to Day. That was the notion that kept going around before Day won a title. I don't like Duke, and neither does most of the country, but I can understand what being hated by other fan bases is like.
Ohio State is certainly one of the most hated fan bases across the country. They treat football like Duke treats basketball. Scheyer is going to keep getting crushed until he wins a title. This was the one to make, especially after having a 15-point halftime lead over the Huskies.
That Braylon Mullins shot will go down in college basketball history as one of the greatest shots ever. Day was able to pull himself from the lowest moment of his professional career to win a championship. It remains to be seen if Scheyer can do the same thing.
