You don't have to remind Ohio State fans at all that the hatred for Oregon is pretty dang high. We're not going to say it's close to the Michigan level, but Dan Lanning keeps reminding everyone outside of Eugene that he's so easy to root against. Such was the case in Oregon's 84-0 win over Portland State at Autzen Stadium on Friday night.
With that win, the Ducks set a new program record for the most points in a single game. The way they did it? With about 30 seconds left in the game, Lanning had running back Brandon Smith score a short touchdown, instead of having his offense take a knee to close this one out. Think Ryan Day would ever pull off this nonsense? No chance.

The previous mark was 81 points, set against Portland State in 2023.

Ohio State should be ready to humble Oregon when they meet later this season
Lanning is getting ripped online for how he handled this win, and it's easy to see why. Hey man, this won't make people forget about the pathetic loss to Oklahoma State in Week 2. Beating up on an FCS school doesn't make Oregon a Top 10 team again, while Lanning's postgame comments somehow made everything worse.
"Obviously, the result of this game is somewhat to be expected," Lanning said like a total front-runner. "We have a better team and no disrespect for Portland State, but that's the way it should look when you execute the way you're supposed to execute against that team. I think we scored on every drive excluding one on offense. I think we got a stop on every drive on defense."
Ohio State is of course more focused on its opponents and not what Oregon is doing, but we'll go ahead and say that karma will catch up to Lanning soon enough. With that, Ohio State will take on the Ducks come Nov. 7 and Columbus is going to be rockin' for that matchup.
Ohio State is 3-2 all time against Oregon, including a 1-1 season split in 2024. That campaign, Oregon took down the Buckeyes in the regular season, but Ohio State got the sweetest of revenge in the College Football Playoff by spanking Lanning 41-21 in Pasadena.
The Nov. 7 dance will be the first matchup at The Shoe between the two sides since 2021 when Oregon posted a 35-28 win. That OSU defeat still stings, but again, business will be taken care of this fall. And when it comes to Lanning, the hope will be that he'll be served a GIANT piece of humble pie when these two teams square off.
He's got an arrogant side which was on full display both during and after Oregon beat up on Portland State for no reason. Maybe it was Lanning's way of getting over getting outclassed by Eric Morris and the Cowboys in Week 2, but there was no reason to run up the score like this. Again, Day isn't going to use it as extra motivation to beat Oregon or anything, but we can look back on this week as another reason silencing Lanning a bit is going to be oh so sweet for Ohio State once it happens.
