Throughout the history of Ryan Day's Ohio State football coaching career, he has wanted at least one quarterback in each recruiting class. Most of the time, he takes just one QB from high school. If he decides that he needs another quarterback, he will search the Transfer Portal for one.
For the 2027 recruiting class, the Ohio State Buckeyes have chosen Brady Edmunds as their quarterback. He has been committed to the Buckeyes since December 2024. However, that commitment has started to look shakier as the weeks have gone on.
Day has started to visit with other quarterbacks in this class, and doesn't look satisfied with adding just Edmunds. Edmunds is a finalist at the Elite 11 camp, which is an honor. However, his performance there might be part of the reason why Day is entertaining other options.
Brady Edmunds' performance at Elite 11 might be why Ohio State is looking elsewhere
Edmunds has not been in the top five performers in the first two days of the Elite 11 performances. It could be a window into what Day has been seeing on his tape over the last few weeks. Day is a great evaluator of talent at the quarterback spot. He knows exactly what he's looking for.
There's still a chance that Edmunds remains part of Ohio State's recruiting class when Signing Day rolls around in December. Edmunds still clearly loves the university and desperately wants to be in Columbus, even if Day's interest in keeping him seems to be lukewarm.
At some point, Edmunds will have to make a decision about his future. Is he better off going somewhere else that wants him more? Is he okay with sitting behind Tavien St. Clair for potentially two years? Those are questions that only he can answer in the next few months.
Ohio State is building momentum on the recruiting trail
The Buckeyes had a bunch of high-level prospects in Columbus this weekend for a visit. That is just the start of what they will be doing on the recruiting trail. The commitment of Prince Goldsby should be the start of a nice run of commitments over the next couple of months or so.
Ohio State had the fourth-best recruiting class in the country last season. So far this year, they have just 13 commitments. Those numbers are going to increase as they add more official visits over the course of the summer. It would be shocking if they didn't end up with another top-five class.
It remains to be seen if Ohio State can grab any commitments from this weekend's visits. Still, it's undeniable that the Buckeyes are slowly starting to get some momentum on the recruiting trail. That's what this time of year is all about. That, and having players develop during offseason camp.
Ohio State should feel good about where they sit right now. Once camp season starts in June, they will get a better look at some unheralded prospects who they could end up offering. That could result in some commitments, too.
