Over the course of history, the Ohio State Buckeyes have usually made some pretty good hires. Rarely do they make head coach hires that fans hate. That usually happens with assistants. There have been plenty of assistant coaches over the last few years that fans haven't liked.
There are three coaches whom Buckeye fans hated the most. The reasons why the fans hated them differ, but the majority of the fanbase didn't love what these coaches had to offer.
1. John Cooper
The only head coach on this list, Cooper helped get the Buckeyes into the modern age of college football. He started recruiting more nationally, which is something Ohio State hadn't really done in the past. He also assembled some of the best teams in Ohio State football history.
Unfortunately, Cooper had a massive issue winning big games. Some of his best teams lost games at the end of the year, especially to TTUN. What ended up pushing him out as the head coach of the Buckeyes was his poor record against the Wolverines.
Cooper finished with a 2-10-1 record against TTUN. He remains the first non-interim head coach not to win an outright Big Ten title, as well. Fans despised him for a while, but they have softened toward him a bit as time has gone on. Now, he still appears on local radio, talking about the Buckeyes.
2. Zach Smith
One of the most polarizing figures in recent Ohio State history is former wide receivers coach Zach Smith. Smith was the wide receivers coach under Urban Meyer for the entirety of his tenure. However, it was far from smooth during his time in Columbus.
Smith allegedly was involved in some domestic violence towards his wife, and Meyer allegedly knew about it. Ultimately, Meyer was suspended for the first three games of the 2018 season due to his lying about the allegations. Smith was fired and hasn't worked in coaching again. In fact, Smith has been in jail since he was fired.
These days, Smith is trying to carve out his own segment of media space, claiming he's an insider. I have personal feelings about what Smith does now, but we'll just leave that alone.
3. Tim Beck
If Ohio State fans hear the name "Tim Beck", they immediately shudder. Beck is one of the biggest reasons why the Buckeyes failed to win back-to-back national championships in 2015. His play-calling against Michigan State remains one of the most baffling series of decisions in modern history.
Ezekiel Elliott carried the ball just twice in the second half of that home game against the Spartans, despite it raining the entire game. Instead of giving him the ball, the Buckeyes lost after J.T. Barrett was inaccurate. From that moment on, the fanbase turned on Beck.
Beck was fired following the 2016 season after just two years with the Buckeyes. Since then, he has floated around from program to program. Surprisingly, he is now Brian Hartline's offensive coordinator at South Florida. Buckeye fans want him nowhere near Columbus any time soon.
