Ohio State Football: Why hasn’t Ryan Day made staff changes?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team lost to TTUN two weeks ago. Since then, there have been plenty of changes to the roster with several players entering the transfer portal. What hasn’t happened is making any changes with the coaching staff so far since the loss.
Right after that final game, I gave you a list of coaches I thought needed to go. While Gene Smith isn’t going to make firing Ryan Day his final act as AD, there are still a few coaches who could stand to be replaced. I understand that the Buckeyes have a bowl game still at the end of the month, but these moves should still be made.
Parker Fleming has no use being on staff. He coaches the special teams and doesn’t do it well. In fact. the special teams were actively bad this year. No other big-time program has a full-time special teams coordinator. So why does Day want to keep him?
Firing Fleming now wouldn’t have any bearing on the Cotton Bowl. In fact, I could argue it might improve the special teams unit in time for that game. You could make the argument that firing Justin Frye could mess with the offensive line before the bowl game, but losing Fleming wouldn’t have a negative effect on anything.
If Day continues to not make any changes to the staff after the Cotton Bowl, then there is a massive problem. There is no way he can come into next season with the same coaches in place, especially on the offensive line and with the special teams unit.
Whatever new athletic director comes in shouldn’t stand for Day doing things like this. He’s lucky that Smith isn’t leaving until next summer as opposed to before the start of the new semester.
