Ohio State Football: What to do if they don’t get a transfer quarterback?
By Tyler Lyman
Recently Kyle McCord, OSU’s 2023 starting quarterback, entered the transfer portal. Many thought that if the Ohio State football team was unable to gain a guy to throw the ball next season through the transfer portal, they would just go back to McCord. This obviously isn’t an option anymore, so now they will need to search for a new quarterback. The transfer portal is the first place to go but what happens if they can’t get a guy?
Many currently predict that Cam Ward will find his way onto the Buckeyes’ offense. It’s still possible this won’t happen, I say if they can’t obtain anyone they have two choices. It would be between Devin Brown and Air Noland.
Reports said that Devin Brown gave McCord, the starting quarterback this season, a challenge during their quarterback battle. Brown even spilt some snaps in the first two games. Devin also said he has no intentions of leaving OSU so he’s a serious option.
Air Noland is the incoming high school recruit that everybody is anticipating. Air Noland could easily be the starter next year, he’s versatile, has outstanding field vision, and his passing is off the charts. What’s the problem then? He would be a freshman starter, Ryan Day may see a possibility where Noland is the reason OSU plays under expectations, and he is at fault for it. See the competitive jump for a freshman from the high school to college level is astronomical.
Both quarterbacks could end up having potential, but let’s all be honest the fans would rather take the risk with a highly recruited freshman than Devin Brown. That is something that this Ohio State football team needs to start doing, taking risks. At the end of the day, it’s if head coach Ryan Day listens to fans and takes the risk.
I see that Day will most likely start Air Noland. As for if Air can be good, I say sure. There have been plenty of freshman quarterbacks who’ve led their team to a good season, such as Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III, and Jalen Hurts.
At the end of the day, in the rare case Ohio State can’t find a quarterback in the transfer portal, they have two options. As for who ends up starting, it will be up to Ryan Day to finally take the risk.
