Ohio State Football needs more creative offense vs. TTUN
By Ryan Stano
It’s been a week since the Ohio State football team lost to TTUN. It’s a loss that Buckeye fans are still trying to digest, especially on a day when Michigan is playing for the Big Ten Championship. I was finally able to get myself to watch the tape in detail from that game.
One of the things I saw that led to Ohio State losing was the lack of creativity from Ryan Day on offense. He didn’t run anything out of the ordinary against the Wolverines. There were no trick plays or new wrinkles to the offense that TTUN hadn’t prepared for.
On the flip side, Michigan broke out a few trick plays. They brought in their backup quarterback to run the ball a few snaps. That got them a first down and helped break down the Buckeyes’ defense. That wasn’t even the best trick they had up their sleeve though.
Michigan threw a halfback pass that caught the Buckeyes completely off guard. Despite the fact that Michigan has shown in past years that they love to do that against the Ohio State football team, they still weren’t prepared to stop any such trick play.
If you are supposedly preparing for this game all year, why not implement a new play or two specifically for this game? That’s what Urban Meyer did when he was leading the program. He never lost to TTUN. Maybe that would be a pretty smart thing to do.
If Day refuses to spice up the offense in the last game of the year, he will find himself on the losing end of The Game again next year. Then he really will be fired because he won’t have a lame-duck athletic director. He’ll have a new one who has no loyalty to him.
We’ll have to wait a whole year to see if he can do that.
