Ohio State Football: Grading the 2023 Buckeye coaching staff
Ryan Day won all his games in 2023 except for the biggest one against Michigan. He needs to get this monkey off his back in 2024 or next season could be his last in Columbus. Other than the Michigan game, Day has done a very good job while at Ohio State.
Recruiting classes have always been in the top five, and his team is competitive on the field. Aside from beating Michigan, the biggest question mark on Day’s resume is with his coaching staff hires. Day lost an experienced coordinator last offseason in Kevin Wilson and replaced him with a young, inexperienced Kennan Bailey on staff. He promoted Hartline, but he did not have any previous coordinator experience.
Day needs help on game days. I think losing Wilson from last year’s staff was a major issue for Day this season. Also having Parker Fleming continuing to take up a valuable coaching spot is insanity. I hope Day addresses these issues this offseason.
While there was improvement on the field and on the recruiting trail this season, other areas of the staff left more to be desired. The Ohio State football team did what they needed to do in all but one game this season. It just so happened to be the biggest game of the year.
This Buckeye staff needs to do everything in their power to get over the top on Michigan in 2024 or they all could be looking for new jobs by this time next year.
