I’m sure a lot fewer Ohio State football fans tuned in to see the CFP rankings released last night on ESPN. After the loss to TTUN, Buckeye fans have other things to turn their attention to, like whether or not they should make a coaching change. Yet the Committee did do something good for Buckeye fans.

They ranked the Ohio State football team sixth in the penultimate rankings. That means they reside above both Texas and Alabama. That offers them a glimmer of hope even if Texas were to beat Oklahoma State on Saturday that the Buckeyes could still make the CFP.

No team has come from seventh or worse in the penultimate rankings to make the College Football Playoff. Ohio State is sixth. I don’t know if that means that the teams in the past weren’t as good as they are now or what, but based on that, Ohio State still has a shot.

It would still be good if quite a few teams lost this weekend. The first thing Buckeye fans should be rooting for is Washington to win on Friday night over Oregon. That would take Oregon out of the equation and make sure that the Pac-12 champ is undefeated.

Secondly, Oklahoma State winning the Big 12 would knock Texas out of the running. Despite Texas being ranked behind the Buckeyes right now, winning a conference championship would likely vault them ahead of Ohio State in the final rankings. So OSU fans should root for OSU.

Georgia beating Alabama is a must as well. That ensures that the SEC only gets one team into the CFP. Finally, Louisville has to knock off Florida State. That is very realistic considering Florida State has to play that game with a backup quarterback.

It’s a long shot for sure, but the Committee has given Buckeye fans some hope. Now, they need a lot of luck.
