Ohio State Football: Jim Harbaugh was right about Ryan Day
By Ryan Stano
It’s been a rough weekend. Anytime that the Ohio State football team loses to TTUN, it’s bad. This loss is so much worse than past ones though. It’s worse because everything was set up in the Buckeyes’ favor heading into the game and they couldn’t get it done.
Ohio State didn’t get any good breaks during the game from the refs either. That touchdown to Roman Wilson that was reviewed for a fumble after Denzel Burke ended up with the ball comes to mind. But it hurts for another reason. It hurts because Jim Harbaugh was right.
We all know Jim Harbaugh’s famous comment about Ryan Day being born on third base and thinking he hit a triple. We dismissed it at the time as a lunatic coach trying to disparage a rival. I never entertained the thought that he might actually be right in his assessment of Day.
Fast forward to today and I believe Harbaugh is right. Day was handed Urban Meyer’s team with Urban Meyer’s players and that’s how he won in 2019. That’s how he made the National Championship Game in 2020. Since then, it’s been three straight losses to TTUN.
This is firmly Day’s program with his players. These are the guys he’s recruited to fit what he wants to see out of this team. What has that resulted in? So far through five full seasons, he has two Big Ten championships, no national championships, and just one win against Michigan.
We know that’s not good enough. That’s why Day has to go. He clearly doesn’t have this team on the right path to beat TTUN. They can’t seem to win games in late November or December like the elite programs do. Like the Ohio State football program used to do.
Day was born on third base. I can’t believe I just said I agree with Jim Harbaugh on something. I need a shower after this.
