Ohio State Football: No more excuses for Ryan Day
By Ryan Stano
The Game is finally upon us. For the longest time, it was a formality that the Ohio State football team was going to win it. Between Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer, the Buckeyes went 16-2 against TTUN. Then Ryan Day took over the program in 2019.
Day won that first game in a massive blowout and then proceeded to get blown out the following two years. Right now, Day is 1-2 in The Game. But with Michigan having cheated against the Buckeyes, the last two years can be forgiven if he wins this year in Ann Arbor.
This will be Day’s final chance to win full and total approval of the Ohio State football fanbase. Winning this game proves that the only reason why TTUN won the last two matchups is because they cheated. Had they not cheated, the Buckeyes would’ve wiped the floor with them again.
Losing this matchup this year with no Jim Harbaugh on the other sidelines would mean that Day can’t be trusted to win the one game that matters. He would be branded a loser and fans would call for his head immediately. He would officially be branded the second coming of John Cooper.
Simply put, there are no more excuses for Day. How the Buckeyes perform in this game will dictate his job status in the future and how he’s remembered by Buckeye fans. A win means the only way he loses games is to the elite of the elite and if someone cheats. A loss means he’s a loser who needs to get fired.
I do think Day is a good coach. His playcalling has been drastically better this year on the offensive side of the ball. The offensive line has massively improved with their run blocking. The defense is elite. Everything is there for the Buckeyes to go into Ann Arbor and win this game.
If Day looks tired tomorrow heading into his press conference, don’t be shocked. I doubt he’s going to be getting much sleep this week. He knows what’s at stake.
