Ohio State Football shouldn’t be worried about CFP ranking
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team was the number-one team in the country for the first two weeks of the CFP rankings. That was based on their strong wins over Notre Dame and Penn State. No other team in the country had two wins that compared to those.
That ranking changed last night as the Buckeyes fell to number two. They are still ranked ahead of Michigan, Florida State, and Washington. Georgia leap-frogged the Buckeyes. I saw it coming and I have no issue with it based on what the Bulldogs have done the last two weeks.
In consecutive weeks, Georgia has beaten top-15 teams. Even though those games were both at home, that gives them two wins that rival what Ohio State has done. Add in the fact that they are the two-time defending national champions and I have no issue with them moving to number one.
But you know what? It doesn’t matter. The Ohio State football team shouldn’t care about the rankings right now. If they win out, the rankings will take care of themselves. If they beat Minnesota and Michigan in the next two weeks, they will be the top-ranked team again.
Their focus should be on beating Minnesota on Saturday afternoon and getting themselves tuned up for The Game. I know that’s exactly what Ryan Day is doing with his team. Getting healthy is important too, although the Buckeyes will be without Lathan Ransom for both games so that’s not ideal.
Winning on the field will give the Buckeyes the strongest resumé in the country and will leave the committee no choice but to rank them number one at the end of the season. I know the team isn’t stressing about the new rankings and Ohio State football fans shouldn’t either. Stress about that final game instead.
