Former Ohio State Football players are teammates once again
By Eric Boggs
The Washington Commanders have traded former Ohio State football player and first-round draft pick Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers for a third-round pick. Young, who was coming off of an ACL injury that he suffered in 2021, didn’t get back onto the field until the end of the 2022 season. Young missed Washington’s week one game this season due to a separate neck stinger before finally getting back on the field.
Young, who won the 2020 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, has accumulated 15 tackles, 12 of which were solo to go along with five sacks in six games of action. Young now joins former Buckeye teammate and 2019 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award winner Nick Bosa.
Ohio State football fans never got to fully experience the Bosa and Young combination that could have been in 2018. Young was a sophomore and Bosa was a junior during that season and unfortunately, Bosa suffered a season-ending bilateral core muscle injury during the TCU game.
Seeing both Bosa and Young in the same jersey again might make many Buckeye fans wonder what could have been in 2018. Both defensive ends went on to be the second pick in the first round of their respective NFL Drafts.
While Young followed up his impressive rookie season by battling with injuries, Bosa has had a great career that has included three consecutive Pro Bowls and an NFL Defensive Player of the Year award last season. Due to injuries, Washington declined Young’s fifth-year option on his rookie deal, making him a free agent after this season.
If Young and Bosa can make Buckeye magic together for the 49ers, helping them to turn their defensive woes around, then Young may earn a decent second contract by the 49ers. If not, he will go on to be a free agent this off-season. Until then, at least we will get half of a season to watch two of Ohio State’s most prolific defensive players in recent history get to play on the same team once again.
