Ohio State Football ranked number one in first CFP rankings

The Ohio State football team has the two best wins in the country to this point. They have beaten Penn State and Notre Dame, with one of those being on the road. Beating Wisconsin on the road is no sad feat either. No one else has a resume that compares to that.

That resume was enough for the CFP committee to rank the Ohio State football number one in their first rankings of the season. They cited those two wins and the defense as reasons why the Buckeyes are topping the rankings. They are the best of the undefeated teams.

Behind Ohio State sits Georgia, Michigan, Florida State, and Washington. Those are the undefeated teams left that have a shot to make the College Football Playoff. It’s not surprising that Georiga is second, but I’m a little surprised Michigan is that high.

Michigan hasn’t played anyone yet. At least Florida State and Washington have played good teams so far. Ohio State might not be playing the best offense right now, but their defense is playing better than anyone else in the country against good competition.

As far as other Big Ten teams in the rankings, Penn State is 11th. They are the only other Big Ten team in the rankings. Notre Dame is 15th though, so that gives the Buckeyes two top-15 wins. No one else in the rankings has that on their resume at this point in the year.

As long as Ohio State continues to win all of their games, they shouldn’t be removed from this top spot. They have one more tough game on their schedule, which is The Game. They do face 6-2 Rutgers this week on the road though, which is still better than any team Michigan has played.

Ohio State just needs to keep taking care of business and things will take care of themselves.
