Ohio State Football: Can Marvin Harrison Jr. get back into Heisman race?
The Ohio State football team’s passing attack got back on track against Maryland last Saturday. Can Marvin Harrison Jr. get back into Heisman contention?
The Ohio State football team needed an impressive second half to hand the Maryland Terrapins its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon in Ohio Stadium. Numerous Buckeyes made great contributions on the day but maybe none bigger than Marvin Harrison Jr. who had a stat line of 8 receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown.
Following Harrison’s big game, the question must be asked if he could find his way back into the Heisman race. The answer is easy. Yes.
Marv has not gotten off to the fast start that we all thought he would. But he has put up very solid numbers early so far. He has a total season stat line of 25 catches for 499 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also averaging an impressive 20 yards per reception.
The NCAA leader in receiving is Missouri’s Luther Burden III with 54 catches and 793 yards. But getting back into the Heisman race for Marv is simple: Show up big in big games. The Buckeyes have some monster games left on the schedule with Penn State, Wisconsin, and Michigan remaining. If Ohio State wins those games and Harrison Jr. puts up numbers like he did against Maryland then, a chance at sitting in New York for the Heisman ceremony is right in front of him.
Nobody is exactly running away with the trophy just yet. Caleb Williams is probably the front-runner, but I think USC is bound to lose one or two games in the regular season, which would open things up for other contenders.
It’s definitely an uphill battle to climb but if Harrison can get on a hot streak, and Ohio State can win out, then with his name recognition alone Route Man Marv could be in New York vying for the Heisman in December.
