The Ohio State football team is set to take on Maryland tomorrow in Ohio Stadium. Could Ryan Day try to embarrass the Terrapins?

There is no love lost between the Ohio State football team and Maryland head coach Mike Locksley. There always seems to be drama surrounding this game when these two teams meet up and tomorrow is no different.

This year’s drama, as Scarlet and Game’s Eric Boggs pointed out, stems from a former Michigan coach now Maryland offensive coordinator, Josh Gattis, saying that Ohio State wasn’t a tough team back in 2021. Now, bygones could just be bygones, but I think Ryan Day is keeping receipts.

Don’t forget that it was a few years back that Ryan Day had his own drama with Maryland head coach Mike Locksley after it was rumored that he snitched on former Buckeye star defensive end Chase Young’s alleged loan, that resulted in a three-game suspension and him missing the game against Maryland. Young also lost his shot at the Heisman because of it.

I believe there is real hatred between the two head coaches. Locksley clearly took offense back in 2019 to Ryan Day’s onside kick when the Buckeyes were up big just before halftime. Gus Johnson said during that 2019 game that it was ‘personal’ for the Buckeyes following the Young suspension. Ryan Day hasn’t forgotten.

But this is a better Maryland team. In fact, they have not lost a game since they lost to Ohio State last November in a close contest. And while the Terrapins have not faced top-quality opponents, the fact remains that they are winning.

Ryan Day is actually known for not trying to embarrass less than opponents. He often calls off the dogs when up big and one of the fans’ biggest complaints about him is that when the backup quarterback gets in the game, they don’t throw the ball and run the normal offense. That is by design from Day, so they don’t embarrass their opponent.

But if given the chance on Saturday afternoon to do so, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Day and the offense hang a few extra points on this Maryland team as Ryan Day is out to prove something this season.
