Ohio State Football: If Kyle McCord plays badly vs. YSU, this should happen
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will take on Youngstown State tomorrow afternoon in the first home game of the season. It will be the second home game that Kyle McCord has started in his career, pairing with the Akron game he played back in the 2021 season.
McCord didn’t have a good game against Indiana. We know that he needs to showcase his talents better. He should have had a touchdown in the game to Marvin Harrison Jr., but the officials incorrectly threw a flag on the play for illegal touching. Big Ten officials told Ryan Day that was the wrong call this week.
In any case, I do expect McCord to perform better against the Penguins. But in the scenario that he doesn’t, what should the Buckeyes do at that point? McCord was chosen as the starter by Ryan Day for a reason, yet Devin Brown is going to get more playing time in Week 2 as well.
If McCord plays poorly again, Brown should start the Western Kentucky game. Day should allow Brown to see if he can lead the offense in a better way and then make a decision on who should be the guy for the rest of the season. The Ohio State football team needs clarity at quarterback before traveling to South Bend.
This is the most important thing that Day will need to have figured out in his coaching tenure so far. The rest of this offense is loaded with talent. All it needs is the right captain to steer the ship. That captain needs to be in place before Week 4, otherwise, OSU is in trouble.
Again, I fully expect McCord to put the struggles he had in Week 1 behind him. I think he’s going to play great tomorrow and really take a stranglehold on the starting job. But if he doesn’t this is the scenario that should unfold next week.
