Ohio State Football: Ryan Day says McCord’s performance was “not good enough for our future goals”
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team didn’t have their best effort on the offensive side of the ball on Saturday against Indiana. They only scored two touchdowns and scored just 23 points. It was enough to win, but it was against some pretty weak competition.
Speaking to the media during his weekly press conference, Ryan Day was asked to rate Kyle McCord‘s performance after just his second career start. Day said that his performance was “good enough to win”, but acknowledged it “wasn’t good enough going forward for us to reach our goals”.
I completely agree with his assessment. The Ohio State football team has to be a lot better on offense if they are going to achieve their goals of winning the Big Ten, beating TTUN, and winning a national title. McCord can play like he did against a bad IU team and the Buckeyes can win, but not in those future games.
Day mentioned that McCord did some good things out there too. He’s right. McCord did have some good throws out there, including one over the middle to Cade Stover for a big gain. The problem is the consistency that he has been preaching all offseason. That consistency wasn’t there.
Day claims that they are going to get Devin Brown in there for more meaningful snaps against Youngstown State, but I doubt that. Brown will likely not get in until mop-up duty time. Day is too afraid to pull McCord when the game is still in doubt.
I do think McCord will play better against YSU this weekend. He should be more comfortable in the pocket and I think he’ll start to throw the ball downfield a bit more too. How much better he plays remains to be seen, but I expect him to at least throw some touchdown passes.
I’m very intrigued as to how Day will evaluate his quarterback moving forward.
