Ohio State Football: The consequences of choosing Devin Brown
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team still doesn’t have their starting quarterback announced to the public yet. We still don’t know whether it will be Kyle McCord or Devin Brown who trots out onto the field in Bloomington on Saturday afternoon to lead the Buckeyes.
What we do know is that there will be specific consequences for choosing each quarterback for the future of the position. If Brown is the choice, that has ramifications for Air Noland and Tavien St. Brown, the 2024 and 2025 quarterback recruits who have committed to the Buckeyes.
If Brown does win the starting job, he will likely be the starter for the next two seasons. That means that McCord will likely transfer elsewhere to pursue a starting job. It also means that Noland has no shot to win the starting job when he comes in as a freshman.
That would mean that a quarterback battle would take place in 2025 between Noland, St. Clair, and perhaps Lincoln Kienholz. Now that doesn’t matter right now. That’s a problem to think about two years from now. But that would be a consequence of choosing Brown.
I also think those are problems the Ohio State football team would gladly take if Brown is the best quarterback choice for them this year. He’s a really talented guy and might have the upper hand in the battle. It sounds like there’s a really good chance that both guys play against IU.
It’s unfortunate that the Buckeyes haven’t made a call on who they are going to start this season with less than seven days until kickoff. I don’t think Ryan Day wanted to have his happen. But it sounds like two quarterbacks are going to be playing in Week 1.
If Brown does eventually win the job, all of these things are something the coaches will have to deal with at some point. But that’s not a problem for right now. I don’t even think these things are an issue period.
