Ohio State names Ted Carter as it’s 17th school President
By Eric Boggs
The Ohio State University announced and introduced to the public on Tuesday the man who has been chosen to be the new College President. Ted Carter, who comes to Columbus, Ohio from Lincoln, Nebraska where he has served as the President of the University of Nebraska since 2020, will be the 17th President in school history.
Carter has an impressive resume. Not only has he most recently served as the President of Nebraska, but he is also a retired U.S. Navy admiral. Last year he was named to the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness.
This past March he was elected to the American Council on Education’s Board of Directors and just a month later he was named as the Commissioner for the Council on Higher Education as a Strategic Asset.
One of the first jobs that will be assigned to Carter will be finding a new Athletic Director to replace Gene Smith, who plans on retiring at the end of the 2023/24 athletic calendar year. When asked about that very task, Carter made the following statement.
"“It’s interesting. If you go back and look at what I had to do at Nebraska in the three and a half plus years, I had to let go of a football coach for the Cornhuskers, hire a new football coach, two athletic directors, one at U of O and one at Lincoln, two chancellors, so I have been in the talent management space for a long time. I’ll just say, there isn’t anyone who is going to replace Gene Smith. He is arguably the most prestigious, best known, most accomplished athletic director in the country. So, let’s just be clear, there is no replacing a legend like Gene Smith. That said, I’m looking forward to working with him. We will have six months to work on it together. I’m excited about the opportunity to build that new team of leadership in arguably the greatest division one sports program of any college campus in the country.”"
It is clear that Carter and Smith will be working together to find his replacement. Although at the end of the day, the decision is Carter’s to make, no doubt Smith will have a heavy influence in that decision. Given that influence, I believe there is a very good chance that the next Athletic Director at Ohio State will have a strong tie to Gene Smith and the Ohio State Athletics Program.
