Ohio State Football: QB updates starting to get concerning
By Ryan Stano
We are less than two weeks away from the Ohio State football season kicking off. Yet, there is still no starting quarterback. The Buckeyes have no one leading their offense and no one leading the team as a whole. Ryan Day offered another update today that is very concerning.
Day said in his press conference that the coaching staff is split right down the middle on who should start. That’s a major problem this late into the quarterback competition. What’s more concerning is the fact that Devin Brown missed some of Spring practice and the Spring Game due to surgery and Kyle McCord still can’t grab the job.
I always thought that Ryan Day would give the job to McCord because he stayed in the program when he could have transferred out. I also believe in McCord’s talent. But at this point, it almost seems like it would be foolish to give him the starting job.
It seems that Brown has done a lot to keep himself in the running for the job. The coaches have clearly wanted McCord to rise up and take the job and he just hasn’t done it. If two-plus years’ worth of practice and work isn’t enough to win the job, that’s concerning.
At this point, I think it would be surprising if Brown didn’t win the job. Day mentioned that he doesn’t know when that decision will be made, but Brown now has to be considered the favorite. It’s very disappointing to have McCord not be able to rise up to the occasion though.
Brown is an extremely talented quarterback and was a five-star recruit in his own right. If the coaches determine that he is the best person to lead this Ohio State football team, the fans will just have to trust Day’s track record of developing quarterbacks.
