Ohio State Football: Could recent athlete injuries affect future sports?
By Tyler Lyman
As we all know there have been a good amount of major injuries to the Ohio State football team in the last couple of years. Is it possible that this could affect the number of athletes in the next couple of generations?
There are a lot more high-profile injuries happening to athletes now. Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest. Bronny James also suffered a cardiac arrest. Alex Smith’s leg injury, and Tua Tagovailoa’s multiple concussions. These are injuries that are extremely severe and may lead many kids to just stop playing certain contact sports.
I believe in the next 10 to 20 years it will be harder for colleges to find recruits due to more people quitting sports due to injuries. It’s also possible that an athlete with good talent just won’t play. I don’t believe this issue will be extremely big to the point where schools shut down some sports, but it is always a possibility.
There will definitely always be athletes in every generation, but like said previously some may just stop because they’re scared of injury. The Ohio State football team will have to deal with that too.
Now you could also look at it this way, maybe not that many kids quit because the risk of injury has always been there. Yet again there are already kids quitting because they’re too small which is a problem we’ve been seeing. Kids are growing slower and slower as more time goes on which just adds another reason some kids never even start a sport they have a passion for.
In conclusion, yes it’s likely we see a decline in the number of people we see playing sports such as football. Though it probably won’t be noticeable for a good while. There will forever be athletes in every generation, and there will always be outstanding talent no matter what sport we’re talking about.
