Ohio State Football: How to settle the offensive line
The Ohio State football team has major questions along its offensive line. The openings are far from settled at this point in camp.
The Ohio State football team has had major questions along the offensive line all off-season. After the Spring game, coaches took notice as they quickly found Josh Simmons in the transfer portal to add another body to the open tackle position competitions.
One week into fall camp, the Buckeyes are still very unsettled amongst the offensive line. Josh Fryar, who has been seen by many as the starting left tackle all offseason, has been seen taking snaps at right tackle recently. This certainly throws a curve ball into things if Justin Frye and Ryan Day don’t believe Fryar can handle left tackle.
It’s also a reflection amongst the current tackles that an incoming true freshman, Luke Montgomery, is being considered for one of the open spots. While Montgomery was a four-star, top-100 recruit, he should in no way have been considered a day-one starter for the Buckeyes.
While the uncertainty at tackle is concerning, the uncertainty at center might be even more concerning. All offseason this was seen as Carson Hinzman’s job. Earlier this week Ryan Day said the competition at center was “heating up” between Hinzman and Jakob James. Day also mentioned that incoming transfer Victor Cutler has been getting better at the position and is in the thick of things.
We are only a week into camp. So, while this is concerning that nobody has claimed one of the three open spots on the offensive line, there’s still plenty of time to get it sorted out. Hopefully, players start to emerge as camp moves along and the quarterbacks could get some continuity with whoever is blocking for them.
